AMAZON: THE LUNGS OF OUR PLANET, IS BURNING
“A nation that destroys is soils destroys itself. Forests are the lungs of our land, purifying the air and giving fresh strength to our people.”
—Franklin D. Roosevelt
Should we care about what is happening in the Amazon forest or Are we just glad by watching the news of Article 370 or about Trump who wishes to buy Greenland. Literally, I am gonna sick after hearing the same news again and again. I can guarantee you that more than 30% world's population don't know about the things happening in Amazon Rainforest and nor they wanna know.
But I want you to know what's going in other parts of the world and what consequences it can lead to?
What is Amazon and where it is?
It is near the Equator in the continent of Southern America covering Brazil, Peru, Colombia, Ecuador, Bolivia, Venezuela, Guyana, Suriname, and French Guiana.
Why it is important for us?
It accounts for 20% of the World's total oxygen produced and also it absorbs millions of tons of carbon emissions. This Rain-forest is considered vital in slowing Global warming and is also home to uncountable species of Flora and Fauna. Also, Amazon is the largest rain-forest on the planet.
How the fire caught in that area?
The Amazon rainforest has been fire-resistant for much of its history because of its natural moisture and humidity but NASA has said drought and human activities are causing wildfires. But I want to tell you that this is not the first time that Amazon caught fire. Actually, it happened in almost every year but no one cares as it is a regular process. But this year it covers a huge area in comparison to previous years and that's why everyone is shocked.
Some conservationist has blamed Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro for the forest fires, saying he has encouraged loggers and farmers to clear the land.
Mr. Bolsonaro said he disagrees with the latest data presented, saying it was the “season of the queimada” , when farmers use fire to clear land.
Cattle ranching is the largest driver of deforestation in every Amazon country, accounting for 80 percent of current deforestation rates.
Amazon Brazil is home to approximately 200 million head of cattle, and is the largest exporter in the world, supplying about one-quarter of the global market.
Amazon Rainforest in Numbers :
73,000 Approx number of fires since January 2019.
4,100 miles of Winding rivers.
1/10 known species on Earth live in the Rainforest.
If it was a country, it would be the Ninth largest in the World.
